From what I understand, the GT-R LM is a pretty American venture though. Apparently lots of key figures and engineers are American.

There's a mixture of of people in the team. The project is coordinated from the Nismo HQ in Japan and has two additional bases, one in America and one Europe.

Darren Cox and Ben Bowlby, two important figures in the project, are European and the drivers will mostly be European and Japanese, with the possibility of one American driver being added for Le Mans or for 2016.

And in the end, there's a Japanese flag on the car.

It's hard to pass the team as American, like it's hard to pass Toyota as a German team and like it's hard to pass the NSX as American, even if it's developed and built in America.

Negative. GT cars are nice, but they are just modified versions of cars for rich dudes.

P1 cars are the real imagination booster, because they incorporate the latest and greatest technology a car can use/or will use.

That's exactly why people love them. People get Corvettes, Porsches, and Ferraris. Race cars based on existing ones are easily recognizable. If you ask people to tell a Zytek apart from a Courage, a lot of them will be stumped.

I'm not saying that prototype constructors don't have the same kind of racing heritage or importance as the GT constructors, but Corvettes and 911s (hell, even the recent Ford GT) have become household names and cultural icons. It's the GT cars that are the moneymakers.
